Reverso Lab Creates a Digital Twin of «Les Tres Ximeneies»

Reviving Barcelona’s Industrial History with Cutting-Edge Technology

Barcelona, Spain – Reverso Lab, a pioneering company in the integration of extended realities and artificial intelligence, has reached a significant milestone: the creation of a digital twin of «Les Tres Ximeneies,» the iconic Sant Adrià Thermal Power Plant. This structure, located at the mouth of the Besós River north of Barcelona, is a symbol of the region’s industrial past.

An Icon of Industrial Heritage

«Les Tres Ximeneies,» built in the 1970s, consisted of three thermal units, each with a capacity of 350 MW (San Adrián I, San Adrián II, and San Adrián III). Originally, the chimneys stood at a height of 180 meters, but were later raised to 200 meters to reduce pollution. These imposing structures, primarily made of concrete, are a crucial landmark for navigators and an integral part of Barcelona’s skyline.

The Technology that Revives the Past

To preserve and study this important structure, Reverso Lab has used high-tech drones to fly over «Les Tres Ximeneies.» During this process, around 600 detailed photographs of each part of the construction were captured. These images were integrated using advanced photogrammetry techniques, utilizing artificial intelligence algorithms to create an accurate 3D model of the structure.

The Process of Creating the Digital Twin

Photogrammetry is a technique that allows for precise measurements and the creation of 3D models from photographs. By employing artificial intelligence, Reverso Lab has not only replicated the physical appearance of «Les Tres Ximeneies» but also captured intricate details that are essential for any technical analysis or historical study.

Use Cases of Digital Twins

Digital twins have applications in multiple fields:

  • Urban Planning and Development: Facilitate urban planning and management by creating accurate models of existing infrastructures.
  • Museology and Conservation: Provide tools for digital preservation and allow museums to create interactive exhibits.
  • Education and Research: Offer platforms for teaching and research, enabling students and scientists to study historical structures without the need for physical access.
  • Virtual Tourism: Allow tourists to explore historical sites from anywhere in the world through immersive virtual tours.

A Digital Future with Reverso Lab

«We are incredibly excited to have created a digital twin of ‘Les Tres Ximeneies’ and to continue exploring the vast possibilities that this technology offers,» commented a spokesperson for Reverso Lab. «Our commitment is to continue innovating and promoting the use of digital twins to preserve and study our historical heritage.»
